what happened?

Both beers were a bit flabby.  I did a couple of RIMS-ish batches after that.  A little better, but it still wasn't there.  It's tough getting started on a new system when I had the old one dialed in.

ETA:  I have all the parts for a sweet 2.5 gallon system in hand, I just need some time to devote to it.

flabby sounds like maybe a water issue.  possibility?

Yup, could be water, although it was not consistent across all four batches.  I haven't got the water at the new place tested.

I got inspired today and make a 3.5 gallon high gravity porter today. The smaller batch made the day fly... less heat up time for strike and sparge water and faster chill. It's also nice not lifting the extra 2 gallons of a regular batch to carry it to my basement.

I usually have to talk myself into brewing, but once I do I'm always happy I did it.

if I have the time it's never a question - very enjoyable way to spend an evening and subsequent morning.

Still haven't brewed anything yet but I did come up with a plan and still putting things together. I'm going to jump back in as an all grain brewer but small batches, 2.5-3 gallon max and put the finished brews in bombers and growlers. The reason I'm going this route is because I want to brew some various high gravity beers to have in hand and maybe enter a comp or two, who knows. It might take a while before that first batch though because I'm kinda wanting to build a small system, like a nano Brutus or something...
