I had problems with my Barley Crusher so I finally sent it back to the manufacturer after a couple of email exchanges with the BCs owner.  I was happy to find it at my door step this afternoon. The rollers look nice and shiny. There is a rubber band (a gasket?) around the passive roller so I can see that when I turn the shaft it spins both rollers. I am unsure as to whether or not this is the "fix?", there was no note about what was wrong or what was fixed. I'd like to think the guy fixed it, I guess I'll find out. I think I am going to leave the gasket on, though, and see what happens.

Yup.  That O-ring will end up in the mashtun pretty soon.

 

I'm having trouble with the passive roller on my MaltMill too.  I think the bearings are worn since I've taken it apart, cleaned and lubricated.  Once I use a screwdriver to get it started it runs OK.

I did the screw driver trick too.  IT took me a good hour to do 20# of grain.  Do you have a Barley Crusher?  Mine worked well for 3 or 4 years, thought I was going to have to buy a new one.  I ended up emailing the BC guy, it took him a good month to get back to me.  (The HBT forum has a whole "hate thread" about the guy's bad customer service.)  After offering some trouble shooting advice (take it apart, clean the rollers, reverse the rollers) he finally sent me an address to send the mill to.

Got ~8 years on my Barleycrusher. 

 

So far, so good.  Passive roller sticks a little now and then, but a quick cleaning seems to clear it up.

I clean mine every few batches with some compressed air.

LHBS uses a barley crusher. It's been used so much that the bushings wallowed out the housing and the rollers wobble now. I stopped using it. Couldn't get a consistent crush and it ####ed up a couple batches.

Sounds like they need to invest in a better mill!

No kidding. Especially since they are a brewery too! I can't imagine they are getting any sort of consistency with that mill. That or they've put the gap as small as possible and they are pulverizing the grain.

I'd say they should ask for their lifetime warranty but I would guessing using it in a commercial environment voids that.

DJ, do you have a JSP Maltmill? I've only heard of this problem happening with Barelycrushers.<-Not a typo

yeah JSP, a lot of grain has gone through it

I probably only have ~1000lbs thru my JSP. No problems yet.

I had my first barley crusher incident today. I had the hopper full and went to get my drill and I spilled most of it on the carpet. Shouldn't they have a notice on it do not do that!!!

did that the first time I used it.  they should put an outline of a human hand on the base so you know what to do with your left hand
