so here is one of my prouder moments.  I bought something like this at walmart:

Posted Image

then I put a small piece of tubing on it with a QD like the ones found here: https://www.brews-br...-gas-qds-cheap/

my gas line off my CO2 tank has a similar QD in it so I can hook up a keg post QD to this hand pump.

I then hook this thing up to a sealed keg.  I hook up some tubing from my racking cane to the liquid post on the keg.  I can then use this to start the siphon - it's a beautiful thing.

Duh

I was just trying to make a joke b/c rarely is anything when brewing beer "cheap"  ;)

Why not just use co2 straight to a carboy cap to start your siphon. Top hole for the racking cane the other to shoot a squirt of gas. This also puts a cloud of co2 vapor in the head space. Just wondering. Brian, I have some stuff I will post soon

that is what I do.

Did something similar for the speidel fermenter.  Gas on the left, cane in the center

It's completed now. I'm currently running a helles at 49 and a session wheat at 69. This thing kicks all ass.

I'm usually siphoning out of buckets or bucket like containers.  I don't like putting the racking cane down through a lid and not being able to see what's going on.  I tried doing closed transfers a few times from my red lid fermenters and I couldn't get the lids to seal and I'd never know how far into the bucket the racking cane was and moving the cane was difficult.  I just generally hated the process.  it's much easier to just clamp the racking cane to the side and go for it with my priming pump.

I have used your method the few times I've had beer in my better bottles or if I'm making cider in them.  in these vessels it works great.

Stir plates are easy builds too. Huge effect on the beer too.
