So B3 sent me a replacement picnic tap for one that looked damaged and wouldn't seal on the screw on cap.  Now the new one is leaking through the spout.  It's like the spring might not be strong enough to hold the pressure in my carbing kegs.  I usually hit them with 30-35 PSI for a couple of days and in the past the picnic taps have never had a problem with this.  This one won't seal though.  any ideas?

Why do you have the PT on when you're carbing at high pressure?

I only use picnic taps and routinely carb at 30psi. I unscrew the top, pull it apart, and keg lube the rubber seal. After a pour, I dunk my whole tap in starsan and hang it spout down. None of my (7) 2 yr old taps leak

i often just throw it on there to make sure there is no air in the dip tube.  it doesn't need to be but it make me worry it's going to fail at more typical pressures since in the past other taps have been fine.

I've never had to lube up the rubber part before but I'll give it a shot.

This is all i got too. I have never done that. I never hook up the outside of said keg until i drop the pressure to serve pressure.

Did you do a quick check on the spring tension vs. your other picnic taps?  Sounds like a weak spring, but it could be a seating issue, too.

I gave up on the high pressure carbing long ago. I find hitting a keg with 20 PSI to seal the lid and then shaking the keg a little each time I go by when cleaning up and then just setting it on 10 PSI when it gets to the serving fridge does a nice job and prevents over carbing.

Same here, although mine are much older.

so it seems to be holding 20 PSI fine right now.  i smeared a little keg lube over the rubber part inside the faucet.  maybe that did the trick.

The lube just lets the rubber slide into the right position to seal. Can't go in dry...

it's interesting I've never had to do this before now though.  I wonder why that is.

so it was holding fine and then I poured some beer just now and it wouldn't seal back up.

question:  is it possible that this heavily hopped beer with lots of hop schputz™ in it is making the faucet not close up properly?  I'm guessing in time I'll find out if this is the issue once the beer has cleared up a little.

Seems like the hop schputz should not be large enough at this point in the process to clog the tap. At least I've never had that happen. Do you have hop stuff large enough to see in your beer?

yeup.  i'm looking at it settled in the bottom of my pint glass right now!  the beer was heavily hopped and then dry hopped in primary and then kegged so some made it through there.  there is also a tube made of SS screen holding more hops in the keg so i'm sure that is not holding it all back either.  long story short - lots of opportunity for hops schputz™ here.

try a different picnic tap and if that has the same problem then likely the schputzTM is the problem
