I went to my Dad's house today to wish him a happy 86th birthday. I brought him a sixer of Hofbrau Original, a sixer of DAB Dort and a sixer of Stiegl Goldbrau (along with some other stuff). All of this was room temp and I was in the mood for a beer so my dad tells me, I have Coors Light and Miller High Life Light. Ugh. Then he says, "Oh wait... " and he reaches into the depths of his fridge and pulls out one of my bottles with Sharpie on the cap. The letters are "NB". I said, "The only thing I can think of is Northern Brown and that would have been a long time ago". I told him that I hadn't bottled and written on the cap in years. Anyway, I take a glass and I pop the top. There is no pop or KSH! or anything. I said, "It's probably flat". I pour it into the glass and it has a nice head on it. My mom (not a beer drinker in any way) says, "Oh that looks like a nice, dark beer". I look at her and don't say anything. I give it a sniff and it smells lovely. I take a sip and WOW! It's actually really good. My Dad takes a sip and he likes it. The brown malt I used and thought was too roasty was now chocolatey (the beer had 2 ounces of chocolate malt in it too). It really held up well. I went back to my old local board and saw that I brewed that beer on January 16, 2008. It's almost 7 years old. Clear, smooth and really a delicious beer.

oldest I have is some january 2010 ole ale.  I think I have three bottles.  it's starting to show it's age in terms of oxidation but otherwise no issues.

well done ken!

Yet another example of what good technique, proper sanitation, and a solid recipe will do for you.

Well done, Ken.  Way cool, you going out somewhere and having someone serve one of your own beers back to you!

I called my dad back after I saw how old it was and I mentioned that I must have packaged good beer in clean & sanitary bottles for it to hold up that long. It's good to know.

So Olé Ale is some sort of Mexican Ale? Bueno Morty. Bueno. :P
