Anybody know what's happened to the HBD.org site? tI's been down for at least several weeks. I hate to date myself so obviously but I still love the Recipator recipe formulation spreadsheet/software hosted on the site and am, quite honestly, hung-up without it. I've got Beersmith but it's too fiddly and complicated.

I don't have any info on it but I fear I may find myself in a similar situation someday because I still use the calculator on Tastybrew.com. Yes, I have Beertools and some of the other products but prefer the simpler approach. I just tried HBD.ORG and it just spins and spins until I get a Yahoo screen. Maybe their server is just on the fritz and someone is not all that in a hurry to resolve it.

Thanks Ken! That Tasybrew Recipe Calculator might just stand in for the Recipator in a pinch. Will it allow you to save a recipe and return to it/tweak it?

I hardly ever went to HBD. Why, I really don't know. There was a lot of info there. Hope it's not gone. Tastybrew is all I've really ever used on a regular basis. I've downloaded others but stayed with TB for the simplicity of it. If it goes a Big Chief Tablet and a #2 pencil can work quite well.I would rather use a keyboard though..........eta: be nice to Denny - I think he's still a mod there B)

I don't think you can save anything there but I have never tried. Also, many, many grains are missing from the drop-down menu as well as hops. DJ accurately mentioned that you could just select any hop, enter the correct AA% and cross out the hop name and put in the proper one. I feel old & crusty relying on that site but I have just never gotten used to the other apps. I probably should at some point.

Just downloaded the open-source Brewtarget from SourceForge. Looks like I can keep that pretty simple. Will try and let y'all know.

Yeah, last I heard HBD was out of money.  Pat probably had to shut things down.

As to TB, Rob keeps talking about shutting it down.  He has no time to keep the site up or upgrade it.  The only reason it's still there is that he's too busy to even shut it down.  Although on thing he's talked about is keeping the calculators and shutting down the rest of it.

hbd.org was too much of an old boys club for me. Seemed like there was a minority of people who were allowed to ask and answer questions. The rest of us are lucky that they allowed us to be within their presence.

If you have reasonable excel skills make your own spreadsheet.  it's pretty easy and it will really make you understand how everything works.

HBD Brews and Views forum seems to be back.  I was just on it.  I sent a couple emails to people who might know what's up.

The BeerAdvocate forum is kind of like this.  I forced my way into it anyway a month or so ago and it's beginning to pay off.  Believe it or not, they're not all 100% idiots.  Some are but every forum has some of those.

I've seen some pretty awful advice in there.  keep that filter on!

Do not know about the Beer Advocate forum. I do not think I ever looked into it.I was a charter subscriber to their magazine and renewed it for two years. Then I did not renew. At the time, I was living on the west coast. About 9 out 10 beers in the magazine were not available to me. It was too east coast centric. Which I thought was dumb. Considering the population the west coast and the market for beer, seems stupid to ignore such subscriber potential.

No, it causes traffic to the ISO:FT section of their website!

If you want to check it out:  https://www.beeradvo.../homebrewing.8/

It's not my favorite but it does get more traffic than, say, this place.

What happened is that Pat is on a long term assignment and only gets home every 3-4 weeks.  If the server crashes or something else happens in that time it has to wait til he gets back to fix it.
