For my last credit hour before I obtain my food science degree, I must create a science based research paper and powerpoint on the topic of my choice. I figured, to be interesting to me, I'd pick something related to beer. So, what kind of topics...science related...would you all recommend?

- role and life cycle of yeast in beer...

- wild yeast in beer...

- balance of bitter/sweet in beers...

- hop utilization...

Those are just a few examples. Not sure if I like 'em though. Whatever I choose, there needs to be quite a bit of scientific research available in scientific type sources.

Any and all advice/suggestions would be greatly welcomed. And, I'd of course love to hear from the pros on the board.

TIA :frank:

Here is a list of very cool experiments regarding beer:  https://brulosophy.com/exbeeriments/

I am wondering what types of resources do you have at your disposal?  For instance, do you have the lab/tools/training to do cell counts of yeast, to measure IBUs, ABV, etc?  Are you looking on primary data from batches of beer you brew or buy or does your program have access to secondary data (large N data sets that others have collected)?

You might consider looking at alcohol beer policy?  Growler laws are a thing in Florida and I think I read that Cigar City is threatening to move operations because of stupid laws.  Maybe a case study on places like Ashville and what the NC govt has done to fuel the influx of breweries there.  Also take a look at The Beer Institute (not a joke at: https://www.beerinstitute.org/) .  Check out the data sets they have and maybe even hit them up and see if they have any projects they'd like see done.

Appreciate the thoughts passlaku...and those two sites have some great information/data! I'm sure I'll use them for whatever I decide on.

As for the 'research'; this is going to be strictly research that has already been done by someone else. I won't be doing any actual research on my topic other than reading others' studies, etc. So I'm basically copying other folks' work. :P (which is what is asked for)

Beer policy would be very interesting, but I think I want to stick with something related to brewing science or something similar.

hmmm...maybe something like the affect that yeast pitch rates and yeast health have on a batch? (maybe just one of those though...looking for around 10 pages, so nothing too broad)

check out Leuven Institute for Beer Research as it may trigger some ideas

https://www.libr.be/index.php

check out below link, it's a Google Scholar search for a paper called "Chemistry of Beer Aging" and this link will let you download a pdf version of the paper. it's an interesting read if you enjoy chemistry

if you start looking for other research papers to read, remember Google Scholar is your friend

There's a whole book out there full of experiments you can try....
